大杉の樹齢は定かではなく、1500年ともいわれていますが、専門家によれば700年以上と推定しており、地域の口碑とかなりの樹齢差があります。落雷による被害，焼損による樹勢の衰退と再生の繰返しを感じることができることから、この生命力が「神木」としてさらなる多くの崇敬を集めています。樹種は「北山杉」で、比較的温暖な和束の地で育成するのは珍しく、この地に同一品種の杉は見当たらないことから、樹齢とともにその神秘性に歴史の存在感を高めています。
